Jan 2022 Windows Update breaking Hyper-V

Symptoms

 

The security updates rolled out on Jan 11, 2022 (KB5009586 or KB5009624) causing issues with Hyper-V. After installing the security updates, the Hyper-V host (Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2012 R2 or Hyper-V Server 2012) can no longer be started.
 
Error when starting the VM
“virtual machine ‘XXXVM’ could not be started because the hypervisor is not running”

 

Resolution

 

Uninstall KB5009586 or KB5009624 

To uninstall the patch, navigate to Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> View Installed Updates  and select the patch to uninstall.
